Sensorineural Hearing Loss

The most common type of hearing loss that can be caused by aging, illness or exposure to loud noise. Sensorineural hearing loss occurs when there is damage to the nerve pathways from the inner ear to the brain.

Conductive Hearing Loss

This type of hearing loss can be corrected with aids or surgery. Conductive hearing loss occurs when sound is not conducted effectively from the outer ear to the eardrum and bones of the middle ear.

Mixed Hearing Loss

When both the outer or middle ear and the inner ear nerves are both damaged a mixed hearing loss occurs and is thus a mixture of a sensorineural and conductive hearing loss.

Sensorineural Hearing Loss

Within Senorineural, Conductive and Mixed hearing losses there are multiple levels of severity of the loss:

Mild Hearing Loss

Soft noises are not able to be heard and carrying on a conversation in loud environments is difficult.

Moderate Hearing Loss

Soft and moderate noises are not able to be heard and carrying on a conversation with any background noise is difficult.

Severe Hearing Loss

Conversations have to be conducted loudly and group conversations are impossible without extreme effort.

Profound Hearing Loss

Some loud noises can be heard but without hearing aids carrying on a conversation is no longer possible without intense effort.
